Demand Justice plans $10M Supreme Court reform campaign: Reports

by

(NewsNation) — A progressive group long calling for judicial reform will soon launch a $10 million campaign for a shake-up in the Supreme Court, per POLITICO reporting.

Demand Justice, which formed in 2016 as a response to Republicans blocking former President Barack Obama’s Merrick Garland pick, is on the offensive again following the high court’s Monday immunity ruling.

The group believes the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision granting presidents full immunity for “official” acts “gives broad protections to disgraced former President Donald Trump.”

Demand Justice reportedly told POLITICO that the funds would be used to advocate for ethics reforms and conduct research on potential Supreme Court nominees.

The reforms in question? Expanding the Supreme Court, limiting justices’ terms to 18 years and creating an independent ethics office and internal investigations council, according to POLITICO.

In a statement, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan blasted the Republican Party for “building a judiciary and a Supreme Court that will amass them more power and act contrary to the will and values of the American people.”

Demand Justice is not alone. Other organizations calling for reform include the American Humanist Association and Court Accountability.
