(NewsNation) — Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., believes what the FBI calls an “attempted assassination” against former President Donald Trump was thwarted due to an “increased protection detail.”

A man with an AK-style rifle pushed the firearm’s muzzle through the perimeter of the Trump International Golf Course on Sunday around 1:30 p.m., according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Secret Service fired at the man, who was hidden in bushes, and he fled in a car. He’s since been taken into FBI custody, with a law enforcement source naming him as Ryan Wesley Routh to NewsNation.

Ivey told NewsNation that heightened security for multiple high-profile politicians has been “in the works already” and that it “may be why things worked out the way they did today.”

“An adjustment has been made. We were briefed, actually, on Friday by the acting director of the Secret Service, and on the order of President Biden, there’s been increased protection detail for former President Trump, Vice President Harris and some others,” Ivey said.

It’s the second attempt on the GOP nominee’s life in recent months. In July, the former president was shot during a rally in rural Pennsylvania.

“This is beyond politics at this we just need to make sure that things are going well, that the Secret Service is protecting our elected officials and any spectators of public events,” Ivey said.
