Harris’ ‘gettin’ shot’ comment ‘common sense’: Former NYC mayor

by

(NewsNation)  Vice President Kamala Harris’ Thursday comment that she would shoot a home intruder may have shocked some, but not former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“I think a lot of people out there listening are saying, ‘Well, that’s just common sense if someone is a danger to you and your family in your house,” de Blasio told “The Hill” on Friday. “That’s something people are going to do to defend themselves,” he added.

“I’m a gun owner,” Harris said during her Thursday “Unite for America” event with Oprah Winfrey. “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re gettin’ shot,” she added.

“I probably should not have said that,” Harris said immediately afterward.

De Blasio said he was just a few feet away from Harris at the event, “and I immediately thought, ‘Well, that’s what anybody feel if someone broke into their house.’ I found it to be authentic. I agree that she also realized it would create some headlines.”

De Blasio also had strong words for Donald Trump’s comments about beginning mass deportations of people in the U.S. illegally when he returns to the White House.

“Mass deportations are un-American and dangerous,” he said.

“The vast majority of (immigrants) are law-abiding and part of our communities. Mass deportation is just not part of the American tradition. I think it would be very dangerous.”

He also blamed the “cynical strategy” of the Republican governors of Texas and Florida of busing thousands of migrants from their states to New York City for deepening the city’s migrant crisis.

On the other hand, de Blasio praised his city’s history of being an immigrant magnet.

“It’s worked for New York City. We’re the greatest place that’s welcomed immigrants in the history of America, and we’re an incredibly successful city at the same time economically and socially.”
