AUSTIN (KXAN) — The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) said Saturday it’s investigating threatening flyers found throughout San Marcos that target supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a social media post.

SMPD chief Stan Standridge said his department has found at least five flyers, with reports about the flyers starting on Friday.

Latino vote in the limelight as the electorate shifts

“We’re trying to identify the scope of how many flyers have been disseminated across San Marcos,” Standridge said. “We have already notified the FBI, and that we’ve also notified the regional fusion centers—both Southwest [Texas] Fusion center and the Austin Regional Intelligence Center.”

The flyers, found on residents’ campaign signs, state that the resident is now in a “national database.” It also threatens that the resident “will be IRS tax audited.”

“It’s a crime in the state of Texas to try to influence or coerce or even prevent a voter from voting,” Standridge said. “When we identify the suspect or suspects, then we will present that to the district attorney’s office for consideration of applicable charges.”

How are presidential election votes counted?

SMPD said that people who find one of these flyers should not remove it, and should call the agency’s non-emergency number, 512-753-2108. An officer will come to investigate the scene and remove the flyer, it said.
