LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– When thinking of polling places, one might imagine a school or a fire station, but at one Pennsylvania polling station on Tuesday, voters exercised their right and then ate their fill.
Shady Maple’s Smorgasbord Banquet Center, the biggest buffet in America, in East Earl Township, doubled as a polling place on Election Day.
Shady Maple has been around since the early 1960s, but in 1985, they opened Shady Maple’s Smorgasbord, an all-you-can-eat buffet that would later become the largest buffet in the country, according to Shady Maple.
According to Shady Maple, the iconic buffet is a staple in the community with 750 employees across two locations: The Smorgasbord and Farmers Market.
Shady Maple’s Smorgasbord is far from your average polling place, but it made sense due to its sheer size. The building is around 100,000 square feet, including a top and bottom level. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the top level alone seats around 1,200 people.
