How battleground states voted in 2020

by

(NewsNation) — Seven pivotal states are being closely watched Tuesday as these could deliver either presidential candidate the final Electoral College votes needed to secure a victory.

These states were just as important during the 2020 election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Swing states, sometimes referred to as battleground states, are a critical part of a presidential candidate’s path to 270 electoral votes.

This year, these states are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump had been neck and neck in nearly all major swing state polls, leading both to blitz the highly contested states in their final days of campaigning.

Biden was able to secure a victory in 2020 largely due to winning these coveted states.

Here is a look at how these states swung in the 2020 presidential election according to NewsNation and The Hill partner Decision Desk HQ.

Arizona

Biden took Arizona by a slim margin, with 49.39% of the votes over Trump’s 49.09%. The state carried 11 electoral votes in 2020 and has the same in 2024.

The state came under the spotlight after Fox News called the state for Biden just before midnight on election night, long before other outlets announced the same outcome.

That projection drew intense blowback from Trump’s supporters and led to a temporary exodus of viewers to more conservative channels such as Newsmax, reported The Washington Post.

Georgia

The Peach State narrowly went to Biden, who won 49.5% of the votes over Trump’s 49.26%. The state carried 16 electoral votes and has the same in 2024.

Michigan

Biden won Michigan with 50.53% of votes over Trump’s 47.85%. The state carried 16 electoral votes in 2020 but lost one of those votes in 2024, now having 15 electoral votes.

Nevada

Nevada went to Biden in 2020, who earned 50.1% of votes over Trump, who got 47.7%. The state had 6 electoral votes in 2020 and has the same in 2024.

North Carolina

The pivotal state of North Carolina was won by Trump with 49.9% of votes over Biden, who got 48.6%. The state had 15 electoral votes in 2020 and gained one in 2024, now having 16 electoral votes. The state was projected to go to Trump, according to NewsNation’s partner DDHQ.
