In a rematch of the 2022 race for the District 41 seat, Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert was challenged by Democrat Will Rollins.

Rollins, a former federal prosecutor, made a second straight run for the office after losing to Calvert two years ago by just more than 11,000 votes.

The outcome was expected to be a major factor in which party controlled the U.S. House moving forward.

Calvert has become commonplace in Washington after first being elected in 1992.

Due to redistricting, the area of California he represented shifted several times, including to its current configuration. which stretches across Riverside County and through Palm Desert.

The Cook Political Report called this race a toss-up, which is one of several closely contested races across California for U.S. House seats.

Calvert leaned heavily into his political experience in seeking another term in Washington.

Rollins has relied on his background of fighting drug offenders, gang associates and those charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Heading into Tuesday’s election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election. Republicans control the chamber with a narrow majority of 220 seats, while the Democrats occupy 212 and three vacancies.
