Jimmy Carter’s hometown pays tribute to late president

(NewsNation) — For many in Plains, Georgia, former President Jimmy Carter was not just a national leader but a hometown hero.

Carter died this week at the age of 100, following his late wife Rosalynn Carter who passed away in November of 2023.

For residents of Plains, Georgia, many people are remembering Carter, who was known as simply Mr. Jimmy.

The former president taught Sunday school and stopped into local restaurants.

Bonita Hightower, owner of Bonita’s Restaurant, remembered Carter as a customer and a good man.

“He ate from my table, his children ate from my table, his grandchildren,” she said. “That’s exciting for my folks back home. It’s humbling, too.”

Plains resident Johnny Jones also recalled Carter’s impact on the local community.

“Oh lord, he boosted this community up from nothing, he sure did,” Jones said. “He made a lot out of this community. He’ll be missed. Plains is going to miss a good man.”

There are black ribbons hanging from the American flags that line downtown Plains and preparations are already underway for a private funeral service that will be held there next week before Carter is buried in his beloved hometown next to his bride of 77 years.
