(NewsNation) — The first services honoring former President Jimmy Carter begin on Saturday morning.

Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

A motorcade will leave from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, to Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia.

NewsNation affiliate reporter WRBL Chuck Williams joined “Morning in America with Hena Doba” to broadly discuss the reverence held for Carter in the area and the South.

“The community has come out, but what has struck me is the people that are coming into the community because they want to be in Plains, Georgia, [today],” Williams said.

From Plains, the motorcade will visit his family farm in Archery, where a farm bell will ring 39 times to signify the former President before traveling to Atlanta.

Carter will lie in repose in Atlanta from Saturday night through to Monday morning for the public to pay respects at Carter Presidential Center.

The former President will then be transported to Washington, D.C. where he will rest at the Capitol Rotunda before his funeral at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday at Washington National Cathedral.
