Duolingo announces the ‘death’ of owl mascot Duo

by

(NewsNation) — The language-learning app Duolingo announced that its mascot, Duo, also known as “The Duolingo Owl,” has died.

Duolingo said it’s working with “authorities” who are investigating the owl’s cause of death, but, “Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know.”

“We are aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments,” the company added in a statement.

Duolingo encouraged fans to share their credit card info to sign up for Duolingo Max in the owl’s memory; however, a spokesperson told USA Today it was a joke and advised against sharing credit card details.

Since Duo’s death, the company has changed its social media icons to an image of the animated owl with Xs for his eyes.

Duolingo plans to reveal more about the “shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise” on social media Wednesday, CNN reports.

Duolingo, founded in 2011, offers more than 100 courses in bite-size sessions covering more than 40 languages.
