US wants to end Ukraine war with little involvement: Ex-ambassador

(NewsNation) — It has been three years since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, and talks to end the war have been advancing between the United States and Europe.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House on Thursday with President Donald Trump, where Starmer made his case to Trump that U.S. involvement would be key to ensuring peace and ending the war.

Trump has called for the United Kingdom and other European nations to increase their defense spending as the U.S. has already provided billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.

Kurt Volker, the former U.S. ambassador to NATO, said talks are coming together and that Trump is focused on ending the war only, leaving France and Britain in charge of leading a deterrence force in Ukraine to prevent further conflict.

“That’s part of rebalancing U.S. relations with Europe so Europe is pulling more of the load,” Volker said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with Trump on Friday to sign a rare minerals deal, which Trump believes is a way for the U.S. to regain its investment in Ukraine’s defense efforts.
