(WPRI) — The Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department announced it will monitor Rhode Island on Election Day to ensure the state follows federal voting rights laws.
During the election, the polls in Pawtucket, Providence and Woonsocket will be monitored.
Has the Electoral College ever favored Democrats?
U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha said the department regularly deploys its staff to monitor for compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections in communities across the country.
They are going to make sure everyone, regardless of their background, can exercise their right to vote.
Earlier this year, Common Cause Rhode Island accused the city of Pawtucket of violating the voting rights of Spanish-speakers during the primary election.
People from the disability rights section will also be standing by making sure people with disabilities have their opportunity to cast their ballot. In addition, the criminal section will be on guard to protect against voter intimidation and voter suppression.
Can you vote in person if you were mailed a ballot?
Personnel from the Civil Rights Division will be on hand to hear complaints from the public.
Complaints can be made by calling (800) 253-3931 or by filling out a form on the department’s website.
