Federal agents, hazmat sent to home of Ohio Secretary of State

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Multiple agencies were sent over the weekend to Ohio Secretary of State Frank Larose’s residence for a reported “security incident.”

According to Dan Lusheck, spokesman for LaRose, a “powdery substance” was found upon opening mail at Larose’s residence in Columbus late on Dec. 15. Along with the substance, Lusheck said “material of a threatening nature” was also received with the mail.

“After coming into contact with the contents of the letter, the Secretary notified his security staff and took appropriate actions to protect his family from any immediate harm,” said Lusheck. “At the request of local authorities, multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agents responded to the Secretary’s home, including hazmat and bomb detection units.”

Lusheck said Larose and his family are safe. The items were taken “for further investigation.”

The incident remains under investigation.
