Trump reverses Biden-era restrictions on appliances

by

(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has revived environmental orders from his first term, reversing Biden-era rules regarding energy-efficient appliances.

The rules applied to household items like showers, washing machines and dishwashers. Trump frequently complained about the rules, suggesting they weren’t as good as traditional appliances.

High-efficiency appliances may use less water and be better for the environment, but other consumers say the extra water gives them better results like cleaner clothes.

In addition to the environment, high-efficiency appliances can be good for the wallet, saving money on utility bills over time. There may, however, be a higher upfront cost.

The Democratic party has favored standards that use less energy and water to run your dishwasher, washing machine or power your light bulbs. But the GOP has pushed back and said consumers should be able to choose even if traditional appliances contribute to environmental damage.

Appliance specialist Shirley Hood says sellers are ready to adapt to the change, even if that means changing direction when presidents change.

“We keep moving forward and progressing and some of the rules from the previous administration will stick and we keep that and then whatever this new administration wants, we’re going to do that,” Hood said. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to keep our customers happy.”

One shopper told NewsNation that while she would consider a high-efficiency appliance to save money on water bills later on, it isn’t her top priority.

High-efficiency models typically cost at least $100 more than traditional ones, but in the long run, they may still wind up saving you money on bills.
